Who Is Novak Djokovic?
Novak Djokovic is the current world’s number one tennis player. He is a six-time Grand Slam winner, with victories in the Australian Open, the US Open, and Wimbledon, and holds the ATP single-season record for prize money won, with his $12 million earnings in 2011.
Djokovic was born in Yugoslavia on May 22, 1987. He has two younger brothers, the elder of which, Marko, is also a professional tennis player. Their youngest brother, Dorde, also has professional aspirations. As is the case with so many great tennis players, Djokovic started with the game while still very young. Before he was even 14 years old, he was part of the Yugoslavian national team for the 2001 Junior Davis Cup.
Djokovic began his professional career in 2003, but he played primarily Futures and Challenger tournaments for the first few of years. By 2007, though, he had established himself as a top-10 player. It was in 2007 that Djokovic began to notch victories over the world’s top two at the time: Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Indeed, he beat them both consecutively, defeating No. 2 Nadal in the semi-finals and No. 1 Federer in the final at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
He would win his first of six Grand Slam titles at the 2008 Australian Open. He defeated Federer in the semifinals and then rolled over unranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga inthe final. Djokovic has been incredibly successful in Australiain the years since, winning the championship in each of 2011, 2012, and 2013.
Novak Djokovic’s breakout year came in 2011. He won three Grand Slam championships that year, beginning with a three-set victory over Andy Murray in the Australian Open final. He defeated Nadal in the finals of both Wimbledon and the US open, rounding out one of the most impressive seasons ever by a professional tennis player.
